One perplexing aspect of the rebellion against Moshe and Aharon is what happens to the firepans used in the rebellion. We would have expected that the firepans be consumed along with those who used them, or at the very least decommissioned, and that they would have been destroyed, as they were spiritually radioactive. Instead, God commands Moshe to instruct Elazar the Kohen to take the firepans and hammer them into sheets of bronze to be used as plating for the holy altar (Bamidbar 17:1-3). Why is this?
