The Talmud states regarding the man that fell from the sky in the desert, “One who eats this amount [each day] is healthy and blessed; one who eats more than this is a glutton; one who eats less, his insides are spoiled.” The Rogatchover Gaon (Tzofnat Pa’aneach al haTorah) cites this statement in explaining the verse (Shemot 16:18) “And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.” Basing himself on statements in the Rambam’s Moreh Nevuchim, the Rogatchover explains that being miraculous in nature, the man was not subject to the properties of physical matter, which can be added to and subtracted from. It revealed itself in this world in an objective sense, corresponding exactly to human need, no more and no less. (See also R. Menachem Kasher’s introduction to Tzofnat Pa’aneach, vol 1, p. 35).
