Description
The sugya addresses the opinions of R' Yehuda & Rabanan regarding the Gezaira forbidding Bedikat Chametz because the Bodek might eat the chametz. The controversy revolves around the issue of balancing the need for a Gezaira, on one hand, with the loss that results from instituting the Gezaira, on the other. As Tos' point out R' Yehuda in the case of Chadash will forgo the gezaira in order not to lose the produce & the bread. Yet in Chametz, R' Yehuda will insist on instituting the gezaira and forfeit the kiyum of Bedikat Chametz. This contradiction led Abaye to his chiddush regarding Lo Bedili Minei. Rava raises a contradiction acc to the Rabanan on this very same issue. They are lenient in Chametz but machmir in Chadash.
