Description
Chapter 8, pages 24-25. The two Batei Mikdashos represent the aspects of the written Torah and the Oral Law. The first Beis HaMikdash was the written Torah. It was a revelation of God's light to the entire world. Therefore the main contention at the time was against God, via Avodah Zarah (and Murder/Illicit Relations). The second Beis HaMikdash is the realm of the oral law, specific to the Jewish people. Prophecy was transfered to the minds and the hearts of the Sages. Therefore, the main contention was by the Tzidukkim and the Baitusim, challengers to the Rabbinic tradition. The Sages whole purpose was to unify the written and oral Law. They were trying to trace everything back to God, and the written Torah.
