Description
The Ramban & Ritva on Makot 9a who establish three separate categories of non-Jews, the Ger Toshav, the Ben-Noach, and the Akum. According to the Ramban, the "Ben-Noach has certain rights & priveleges. The Rambam does not seem to recognize the "Ben-Noach" as a separate category. The source for the Rambam seems to be Erchin 29a; there is no Ger Toshav without an acceptance in front of Bet Din at the time of Yovel. The status of a Ben-Noach in our time would depend upon these opinions in the Rishonim. This bears on many contemporary issues, such as permitting non-Jews to live in the Land. We will differentiate between "LeHachyoso" as a minimal obligation & "LaTuv Lo" as a far reaching obligation of chesed vis-a-vis the Ger Toshav.
