Introduction to Meseches Kesubos - The topic of "kenas" - fine - in cases of rape as the start to the 3rd chapter of Kesubos. - The theme of marriage as symbolic commitment in the Rambam - The Rambam's counting of premarital relations as a negative mitzvah in order to prevent the thought that it "just" incurs a fine (which are incurred in cases of seduction or rape). It is wrong for many reasons, as relates to the lack of commitment to the relationship which is bad for the woman, children. - The language of "acquiring" a wife in strange business-like language as emphasizing the commitment and reciprocity involved in marriage, like the seriousness of a business deal. - This metaphor breaks down at a certain point To be continued
