Description

We will study Rashi carefully and address the following question: will we allow for the violation of Yom Kippur in the case of a pregnant woman even if she is not in danger but the life of the fetus is in jeopardy? The Ramban quotes BaHaG who assumes based on the sugya in Erchin that the embryo is considered a "nefesh" and we must do everything to save the fetus. Rashi here in Yoma seems to assume otherwise, and the Ramban quotes rishonim that we violate Yom Kippur only if the life of the mother is threatened. But how should we interpret the sugya in Erchin? In the next shiur we will discuss the question of a "choleh", i.e. the sick person, should he eat on Yom Kippur?
