Semester 3: Shiur 1. We examine critically conventional theories for the emergence of the synagogue, in particular critiquing the idea of the synagogue as a "Temple in miniature" in response to the loss of the Beit ha-Mikdash. Archaeological and literary sources receive consideration. What are the implications of our investigation for aspiring 'ovedei Hashem?
