We will begin this Pshat shiur for Berachot 5a with Rav Kook's insight into the 'Luchot Ha'Even' and the confrontation between Reform Judaism and our understanding of what it means to be a Jew. We will continue our study of the two statements of Rav Yitzchok regarding the Segula power of Kriat Shema al HaMita in the struggle to defeat the forces of evil. We will analyze the statement of Reish Lakish re: the power of Torah study in the battle of good vs. evil, and the severe punishment of 'yisurim' (suffering) for one who fails to take advantage of the opportunity to study Torah. Rav Kook presents an understanding of two distinct categories of Yisurim. The 'chiddush' of Hashem giving the Torah and yet is happy.
