Description

The mitzva of ner chanuka requires that a single candle be lit in the house, 'Chanuka: Ner Ish U'Beito'. Does the one who lights serve as a Shaliach (agent) for the household? If so, we must understand why chanuka is different than other mitzvot which do not lend themselves to shlichut, e.g. tefillin, yeshiva b'succa? And how can a woman who already accepted Shabbos ask someone else to light on her behalf, a case which is outside of the preview of shlichut? How can a katan light on behalf of a gadol? The chacham Tzvi presents a new thesis: Chanuka is not a personal obligation which requires shlichut, but rather an obligation incumbent upon the Bayit. In this shiur we will explore this new & revolutionary definition of the mitzva of Chanuka.
