Description

Zohar  comments that Shabbos consists of two aspects- day and night. Zachor (remembrance) and Shamor (observance) were uttered  simultaneously representing the male and female aspects of Shabbos respectively. Zachor- is the male aspect and requires action by night. Shamor is the feminine aspect and means watching, waiting, receiving by day. Shabbos was promised by Hashem that Knesses Yisrael (the Congregation of Israel) will be her mate. Hashem reminds  Bnei Yisrael  at Har Sinai that Shabbos is her companion. The holiness of Shabbos is woven into the fabric of Creation but needs action to penetrate our beings.
