A deviation from normal healthy ethical life ultimately results in withdrawal from religious life. Abandoning the mitzvos (commandments) of Hashem is a terrible yeridah (moral decline) in ones ethical life also. The world cannot live without G-d. If we do the wrong thing it has an impact on our free choice and desire to do good.
