We commit sins because we do not see ourselves as good. Low self-esteem comes from the perspective that evil is part of our "self". When evil has spread to the point where we see our self as mostly or almost completely negative, the solution is to rediscover the true “I.” We dispel a negative self-concept by understanding that the body is only a garment and the “I” is the soul, which Hashem says is very good. Getting approval from others is an obsession. The approach of gentiles is to build from the outside, not from within. If we have a simple basis of emunah (faith) in the Creator, and believe that the Torah is true, we must believe that we (and all of mankind) is very good.
