P. 153. The paths of hachna'ah (submission) and havdalah (separation) are preparatory stages to reach the way of hamtakah (sweetening). Firstly, we separate our essential selves from actions and thoughts that destroy us so we feel like a "good person." Life is continual movement between the world of the levad (alone) and the world of togetherness. Hamtakah is unifying and merging with the Jewish people and then with all that exists. True unity can only come about through the spiritual power of the neshamah (soul).
