Description
p. 8 - The Ramchal's opening statement that true and known teachigns of Torah are forgotten and neglected. People generally don't forget their spiritual mitzvos (commandments), e.g.,putting on Tfillin, lighting Chanukah candles; so why do we forget the basic principles in middos (character traits) and of being a Jew? Forgetting the avodah she'b'lev (service of Hashem). Tikkun hamidos (improving our character) was already neglected during the time of the Rishonim (early halachic decidors) - this is not a recent problem. Why is something that is explicity stated in Tanach (Torah, Prophets, Holy Writings) and by Chazal (sages) completely pushed aside? There is something internally wrong with a person that fights against hearing mussar (ethical reproach) or improving middos. Boys liking girls is normal, natural and built-in; it's how we deal with that reality that matters. Struggling to remember who and what we are - Jews, filled with Hashem's mitzvos. What do we truly value and hold dear? In the world of Haman, only 10,000 sheqel are important; in our world, we can "bother" the greatest sage for a decision over just half a sheqel. The power of Amalek is to devalue everything.
