p. 63. Sharpening and fine-tuning our character by studying the very fine distinctions in choshen mishpat (the area in Jewish law dealing with interactions between man and his fellow man). Chassidus (devoutness) can only be obtained through usage of both the heart and the mind. A posek (decider of Jewish law) requires a very broad heart to be sensive in his halachic decisions. The sefer Mesilas Yesharim (Path of the Just) teaches the path to a pure heart, great sensitivity and how to combine these two with sharpness of mind. G-d - given talent, or learned skills? The power to unify G-d (and what does that mean?). Different components of a person's soul. Are good midos (character traits) natural to a Jew? Poor midos are not or essence. An easy excuse - defining poor character traits as a psychological illness.
