p. 69. Having to dig so deep within ourselves in only half the problem. The things (both external and internal) that drive us away from where we need to be. Loving this world rather than just living in it. We don't have to be ascetics to be good Jews…but it's not so good we don't feel any tension between complete immersion in this world and our avodas Hashem (divine service). The competition between olam hazeh (this world) and avhavas Hashem (love of G-d): we cannot be completely in love with Hashem and this world at the same time. We must invest time and effort to get to the neshamah (soul). Love of Hashem requires great and deep inner wisdom. The seven middos (character traits)
