A beautifully wrapped gift box for the king - either it's empty, or worse, full of disgusting things === A Jew wrapped in external mitzvos, t'fillin, Shabbos, learning, etc. but angry, with poor middos (character traits), jealousy, etc. Hashem demands our hearts and minds. Just the heart or just the mind is not enough. The most beautiful dishes, but no food; many mitzvos (good deeds/commandments), but no neshamah (soul). The state of mitzvos when the Ba'al Shem Tov came into this world. What will we answer on the final day of judgement? If I don't study and learn, how can I hope to improve myself?
