Description

p. 84. "Mitzvas anashim melumadah" - going through the motions of Yiddishkeit without mind and heart. What does it mean to be G-d fearing? What is true yirah (fear/awe) - it is NOT a scary, negative thing. Fear of punishment is merely the first, but necessary, level of true yiras Hashem. G-d thinks about much more than my going to a movie or what kind of hat I wear (if at all) - He is not hung up on that; only people are. We often lack a fundamental understanding of yirah, what its branches are, how we acquire it, and how it affects other areas of life and avodas Hashem (service of G-d). Human beings don't forget deeply ingrained experiential memories (e.g., burning my hand, experiences during the Holocaust). We live in this physical world, occupied with physical concerns, and that's why we forget Hashem.
