Page 150. There is a taharas halev (purity of heart) where we only want what is permitted. Taharas hamoach (purity of mind) is having clear pure thoughts and thinking about what you want. Once we recognize our ratzon (will) in that moment, then we can change our ratzon to be on a higher level of serving Hashem. The goal is to want only want Hashem wants. The most basic requirement to be on the Mesilas Yesharim program is to live by halacha (Jewish law), which forms the vessel to be able to fix middos. A mitzvah connects us to Hashem. Doing the mitzvos in all of their details refines the body.
