Page 209. There generally are three types of taivos (desires) - for the holy, forbidden, permitted. What exactly is it that distances a person from Hashem, is it the fact that a person has desires, or is it only the desire for something forbidden, or the overindulgence for something permitted? Desires for gashmius (physicality) and ruchnius (spiritual things) cannot live together, similar to fire and water, Rome and Yerushalayim - why is that? An interesting study about the religious beliefs of scientists and those who study humanities. Why two co-wives [not halachically permitted today] are called "tzaros." Desires which impact a marriage. Although physcial and spiritual desires cannot naturally co-exist, Hashem created a world in which the "oneg" (delight) of Shabbos is partially defined as eating and drinking. Like a cornered animal, if we try to completely overcome and starve away the desires of the body, it begins to defend itself with increased vigor and adrenaline. The fight against food.
