Description

P. 285 Only by keeping mitzvos and working on and repairing our midos can we achieve dveykus to Hashem. A person's ego might become inflated due to his learning, davening and even physical afflictions which moves him further away from Hashem. Conversely, a person who has eliminated his anger, pride and other bad midos, yet has not broken down the barriers of the body can also not reach dveykus. Therefore, only the two-pronged approach can help us reveal the divine soul within us. The human body with it's 613 "components" needs to be properly prepared by means of the 613 mitzvos. Being mostly good and hoping that the not so good minority will be swallowed up in the majority does not work. But there is no such thing as a perfect person; therefore, even though a person may fail from time to time, if he "lives" on the path of teshuvah, he will be able to lift up his negative actions. Even though a person can get lost in the details, if he manages to lift his head out of the weeds, he can understand that this little detail was very important. A small failing or blemish grows together with the person and is magnified, especially when examined in the world to come.
