Description

P. 306 The more we manage to poke holes in the walls separating us from Hashem, the closer we will feel to Him. How strong is the pull between us and Hashem? Seeking ones own way of closeness to Hashem has the advantage that the evil side is not necessarily waiting on that particular path. Rebbe Nachman's advice - turn one's learning into tefillah. Running from questionable, maybe even permitted activities, like from a fire. In many instances this is obvious, but in others, it requires a tremendous amount of honesty, or the objective perspective of somebody who knows us well. How do we decide what will bring us closer, or distance us from Hashem? Aveiros lishmah (sins for the sake of Hashem) are a mistaken and non-working approach. Bechirah applies only within the context of the mitzvot. Things that, objectiviley, distance us or bring us closer whether we feel this or not. The importance of thinking and being conscious of our thoughts and actions. A settled mind asks: Will this bring me closer to Hashem or further away? The danger of robotic observance. What is a person's underlying motivation for not violating Shabbos? Is it fear, or the fact that it will distance him from Hashem?
