Description

The Jews sinned in Shitim because it is a place where one feels no need to conform to society. We learn from Shitim to act according to the will of G-d regardless of others’ opinions. Rebbi Akiva excelled in acting correctly regardless of others’ opinions, and this caused his talmidim’s slight deficiency in respecting each other. We learn from Rebbi Shimon Bar Yochai that even as we concentrate on perfecting ourselves during the days of sefira (counting), we must continue to accept the ways of others.
