Description

Semester 3: Shiur 9. [The first 4 minutes are cut-off, but this should not affect listening experience]. We examine the well-known category within Chazal of the "'am ha-aretz." Who were they? Did they represent the "average" Jew? What, if anything, do Chazal's relationship with these people tell us about Chazal's place in their own society? What, in fact, was Chazal's relationship to these people. We compare sources from Bavel to sources from Eretz Yisrael and attempt to elicit a clearer picture of the strategies to be found in Chazal for relating to people or communities with values at variance with our own.
