Description

Semester 3: Shiur 10 - We focus on questions of culture and geography. Where did the chachamim that make up Chazal tend to live? Were there rabbis in other places as well? What role did cities and rural villages play in rabbinic thought? Who were the "average" people around whom the rabbis lived, and what was their relationship with those people? How did Chazal conceive of its own leadership? Was it centralized, more diffuse, or something else? All of these questions and more are dealt with in this class, as we attempt to derive lessons from Chazal with respect to the role of the rabbi in creating and serving the ideal Jewish community.
