We will begin this shiur for Kiddushin 20b-21a with more about גרעון כסף and the sympathetic Halacha that the Eved can redeem himself at the lowest price if his market value appreciated. We will move forward and learn some of the laws of גאולה that apply to both: שדה אחוזה ובתי ערי חומה. We will see how the Torah balanced the compassionate 'right hand' with the harsh 'left hand'. On the one hand there is גרע כוחו and the possibility of redemption is severely limited, yet on the other hand the Torah will be compassionate and allow for גאולה thru Yovel. In the case of מקדיש שדה אחוזה the Torah is harsh & excludes Yovel, but is liberal in the scope of גאולה. Where do we place גאולת בתי חומה? There is no Yovel, expand the scope of גאולה.
