Description

This Halacha shiur for the three weeks entitled "Havdala on wine or on beer?" is an attempt to define the concept & role of חמר מדינה. We will prove that while beer may be acceptable for Havdala, its status for Kiddush is highly questionable. We will study the Poskim who are more lenient re: Kiddush by day allowing for Chamar Medina. The latter applies to any beverage which is so significant that most people serve it as part of a main meal on a regular basis. Must Chamar Medina contain alcohol? Would that make whiskey more appropriate than fruit juice? Which is preferable: Havdala on wine when there is no child to drink, or Havdala on beer? We will try to understand why Chamar Medina might not work for Kiddush as it does 4 Havdala.
