Description

For Masechet Bava Matzia 45a-b we will study the sugya of the status of various coins, specifically gold & silver coins, as far as חילול פרות מעשר שני. We will study a variety of interpretations of the debate between Beis Hill & Bei Shammai. The latter prohibits redeeming silver onto gold and the question is why & to what extent. For example if Beis Shammai defined gold as פירא did he go as far as invalidating חילול פרות מעשר שני onto gold coins? Or is there a theory of relativity here? Do Beis Shammai invalidate the חילול even post fact? Is his opinion based on a DeOraisa or is it Rabbinic in nature?
