At the beginning of the "Berit" section of Sefer Devarim, Moshe commands B'nei Yisra'el that immediately upon their entry into the Land, they are to go to Mt. Eval and Mt. Gerizim, which overlook the city of Shkhem between them, and participate in a one-time covenant ceremony which involves a specific set of six of the tribes on each assigned mountain. Exploring both the geographic as well as historic significance of Shkhem, we propose an explanation for the location, assignments and purpose of the ceremony. This shiur was given in memory of יונתן הלל בן הרב אשר אהרן ומרים whose Yahrzeit is on 18 Elul. יהי זכרו ברוך
