Description

On the 28th of Sivan, 5701 (June 23, 1941), the Germans entered Lithuania and began to torment and murder Jews. They were joined by Lithuanians who gleefully participated in hunting down Jews and seeking to prove their anti-Semitic credentials to the Germans. Many Yeshiva students were among those who were sent to the “Seventh Fort”, where they faced an ominous fate. Rav Oshry was approached by “Maran HaGaon HaTzaddik” Rav Avraham Grodzinsky Hy”d, the administrator of the Slabodka Yeshiva, to ask the secretary of the Agudas HaRabbonim (Rav Dovid Itzkovitz Hy”d) to approach the Lithuanian authorities and request the release of the Yeshiva students. This entailed danger, for the Lithuanians could abduct Rav Itzkovitz and send him to certain death. Should he endanger his life to save the Yeshiva students?
