Like many Marylanders, Mudd was very unhappy to put it mildly with the Lincoln Administration which ruled Maryland with an iron fist-necessitated by the fact that it was a slave holding state before the war with many sons in the Confederate Army. Union troops had to ward off snipers in the Baltimore area on their way to Washington D.C. Booth knew that and had a brief acquaintance with Mudd but he was not part of the conspiracy.. In 1869 he was pardoned but the conviction was not erased. I will do this Haftorah (again) on Shabbos. BH But aren't there mixed messages about Shaul ha melech and doesn't it seem that Yonaton should have avoided the last battle-so he and David could rule simultaneously and everything would have turned out better-(altho Our Father in Heaven knows best) and David gave Shaul and Yonaton the greatest elegy in history.
