The Maharal explains that the severity of Lashon Hara is due to the contamination of speech, which defines a person. One he speaks Lashon hara is therefore considered כופר בעיקר. (The shiur is based on the text of the Maharal in נתיב הלשון פ"א and פ"ח)ץ
