In our preperation for Pesach, we will study a number of paragraphs in our liturgy for Pesach and in the Hagada which indicate a dual nature to the experience of redemption. Since the mitzva of Sippur Yetzias Mitzrayim must lead us to a profound sense of gratitude, we feel compelled to appreciate the duality of the redemption. We will analyze the two dimensions of Yetzias Mitzrayim, גאולה ופדייה. The concept of 'pediya', if understood properly, will shed a new light on the ability of the Jew throughout the many generations of Galut and subjugation to enemy nations to maintain his loyalty to Hashem and his people. The redemption represents an existential transformation of the Jewish people that will protect us for eternity.
