Ahaz, King of Yehuda, faces a significant challenge: Retzin, King of Aram, and Pekah, King of Yisrael, are attacking his land and threatening to conquer Jerusalem. Retzin and Pekah had formed an alliance against Assyria, leaving Ahaz with two apparent strategic options: join their coalition to fight Assyria or seek aid from Assyria itself.
In response to these two realistic options, the prophet offers Ahaz a third, less popular and seemingly irrational choice in the context of the time: “Be guarded, Stay still”—do nothing. To convince him of this unconventional path, Yeshayahu assures Ahaz that the downfall of Aram and Efrayim is inevitable: “In another fiveand sixty years, Efrayim will be shattered as a nation” (7:8). He later refines the promise to an even shorter timeframe: “For by the time he knows to refuse what is evil, to choose the good, the land of the two kings you dread will all be forsaken” (7:16).
The temptation to request help from Assyria is strong, but the cost would also be significant. Seeking aid from a superpower often begins predictably, but the outcome is uncertain. Indeed, the Book of Melakhim records that Ahaz disregarded Yeshayahu’s prophecy, sought assistance from Assyria, and paid a heavy price in taxes. This decision also led to Assyria’s eventual war against Hizkiahu.
Yeshayahu’s message is clear: “Be guarded, Stay still.” The people of Yehuda do not need to participate in the geopolitical games of their time. Yeshayahu demands that Ahaz refrain from making a choice, trusting that God will manage the conflict as He sees fit.
Let me conclude with a point for reflection: If we accept that every prophecy recorded is relevant for future generations, how can we apply this one to our time? How do we discern when we are meant to stay quiet and refrain from action, and when it is vital to take decisive steps?
