Dr. Mitchell J. Schwaber is the director of the National Center for Infection Control of the Israel Ministry of Health. A native of Boston, he received his AB degree in Romance Languages and Literatures at Princeton University prior to pursuing his medical studies at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, internship at Massachusetts General Hospital and, upon making aliyah in 1992, medical residency at Hadassah University Hospital – Mt. Scopus, Jerusalem. Upon completion of his military service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), he trained in infectious diseases and epidemiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston. In addition to his duties with the Ministry, he practices internal and infectious diseases medicine at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and Maccabi Healthcare Services. He is an officer in the IDF Medical Corps Reserves, in which capacity he was called upon to serve in the IDF Field Hospital in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake. He resides in Modiin, Israel, with his wife and three daughters.
