Chapters 24–27 are considered a distinct unit within the Sefer Yeshayahu (feel free to judge for yourselves) and are referred to in academic literature as "Yeshayahu's Apocalypse." These chapters are characterized by expansive and highly poetic descriptions of chaos that is destined to engulf the entire world. For instance: “I say, ‘I am starving, starving, aching.’ Traitors betray; betrayal – traitors betray; terror, trench, entrapment for you who live on earth. (24:16–17). More than providing a detailed description of calamity, the text conveys the sense of devastation through poetic and lofty language.
It seems that while the earlier chapters of Yeshayahu focused initially on the Kingdoms of Yehuda and Israel and later on various nations, these chapters take a universal turn, addressing the entire existence. The dominant terms in these chapters are “the land”, “the earth”, and “the world,” upon which catastrophe will descend. The characteristics of this catastrophe are reminiscent of the Day of the Lord as described in earlier chapters of Yeshayahu: the collapse of societal hierarchies (e.g., “People and priest alike, servant and master alike, maid and mistress,” 24:2); only a few survivors will remain (e.g., “Humanity left a bare remnant,” 24:6); and, as seen in the recent prophecies against the nations, feasting and wine-drinking will cease: “No more will they drink their wine in song; strong drink has turned bitter to the drinker” (24:9). The climax of this apocalypse is the universal recognition of God’s name: “So: Out of the fires, glorify the Lord; in the coastlands of the ocean, the name of the Lord, of Israel's God” (24:15).
The expansion of the Day of the Lord reaches a new peak at the chapter’s conclusion — not just Yehuda and Israel, not just the nations, not even the world alone, but all of existence, including the celestial bodies: “On that day, the Lord will take notice in heaven of the heavenly host, and on earth of the kings of earth... The moon will be abashed, the sun ashamed” (24:21–23). Both the heavens and the earth together will acknowledge God’s kingship, centered, of course, in Jerusalem: “For the Lord of Hosts will rule, on Mount Zion, Jerusalem, before His elders - in glory” (24:23).
