Pages 43-44. In exile, everything is seen as it's own existence, separate and distinct of a larger whole. Therefore, small-mindedness is the life force of exile. Jews live separate lives, with little or no influence on one another. Everyone lives like a child, in his or her own four cubits. the mindset of exile is small ("katnus") and confined, whereas the mindset of redemption is broad ("gadlus"), with an emphasis on connection and continuity. Someone stuck in their own little world cannot acquire anything in the world,because he never steps out into the world at large. He is a part of the larger picture, yet lives in solitary confinement.
